ENVIRONMENT
I was told once that maybe some people are too environmentally concerned. I disagree. I hope to do as much as I can to help the environment in my life, while being realistic and happy at the same time.
Please get involved in your community. Every little thing counts and adds up to great environmental change. It is more than possible.
I made a
newsletter for a bit so check it out.
Also, please check out my
environmental links page.
Here are some small, cost-effective, changes you can do to make a difference:
- Change all the lightbulbs in your home to compact florescent lightbulbs.
- Lower your thermostat 1 degree in the winter. It can save about $100/yr for you. (UI)
- Set your water heater at 120 degrees or lower. You can save $15-25/ yr depending on your fuel type. (UI)
- Open the shades during the day on south-facing windows to let the sun passively warm your house. Close the shades at night to keep the heat in.
- Turn lights off in rooms you are not currently using.
- Buy recycled toilet paper, printer paper, bags, etc.
- Buy products that are all natural and packaged using recycled materials.
- Donate used clothes, furniture, etc to places like Goodwill
- Get books and movies out of the library rather than buying them
- Keep the air pressure in your car's tires high enough and keep it well maintained.
- Don't buy bottled water. It's not any better for you and it's REALLY bad for the earth.
- Subscribe to online rather than print media
Some bigger, even more fun changes you can make:
- Install a green roof! See my newsletter for more information
- Plant deciduous trees to shade your house in the summer and let in sun in the winter.
- Bike to work when it is warm enough out
- Carpool
- Become a vegetarian
- Become a foster or adoptive parent
